Bicycle Lane Project (BLP) Making Islamabad Sustainable City
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has embarked on an ambitious Bicycle Lane Project (BLP) to promote eco-friendly transportation and prioritize the health and well-being of Islamabad’s residents. M/s. Railway Constructions Pakistan Limited (RAILCOP) are the Contractor of the project. The project is proposed in phases:
Phase-I focuses on developing bicycle lanes on two major arterial roads: Jinnah Ave and Margalla Rd and connecting the loop via 9th Ave (F9 Park) and Constitution Ave. This loop was selected as it covers a major travel route, Jinnah Ave, as well as a scenic andrecreational route, Margalla Rd. Along with the loop, Phase I develops bicycle lanes around G-6, G-7 and G-8 sectors.
Phase-II focuses on developing the cycling network further and expanding it in the remaining 15 sectors. Cycling lanes on sector boundaries and on sector roads leading to Markaz will be developed in Phase-II.
Key Highlights
♦ 374 Kilometers of cycling tracks planned across various sectors and areas of Islamabad
♦ Project to cost Rs. 2.4 billion
♦ Cycling tracks along highways to be linked with Metro Bus Station
♦ Establishment of 150 Parking Stands citywide for easy access to bikes
♦ Project time period 18 months
Infrastructure Development for Healthier Lifestyle
The project will integrate cycling tracks along highways, including those connected to the Purple Line Metro Bus project, such as Khayaban-i-Iqbal, G-6, G-7, G-8, Green Double Lane, Jinnah Avenue, and Red Double Lane.
These dedicated lanes will not only facilitate commuters but also encourage a healthier lifestyle among citizens.
In addition to constructing cycling tracks, the project includes the establishment of 150 parking stands strategically located throughout the city. These stands will offer citizens convenient access to affordable bike rental services, with each stand accommodating more than 40 electronic bikes.
As part of the initiative, the gradual phasing out of petrol-powered bikes will be implemented to further promote sustainability.
Enhancing Access and Safety
Furthermore, stringent measures will be implemented to ensure the safety and security of cyclists, including the installation of proper lighting arrangements and enhanced security protocols along the designated lanes.
The bicyclist lane project signifies a significant step towards creating a more sustainable and cyclist-friendly environment in Islamabad, aligning with the city administration’s vision for a greener and healthier capital city.
The Ground Breaking Ceremony of the Bicycle Lane Project (BLP) was conducted on 18th March 2024 by Capt. (R) Anwar ul Haq, Chairman CDA. Syed Najam Saeed, CEO RAILCOP (the Contractor), was also present in the occasion.
The official inauguration ceremony of the project is set to take place in the coming days, with Honorable Prime Minister of Pakistan slated to be the chief guest.
